A 70-year-old man was killed in a head-on collision in Tijeras. At 5:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 6, New Mexico State Police responded to the scene of the fatal head-on collision between a Ford F-150 and a Kia Forte on Highway 337 in Tijeras. The driver of the Forte was David Iacoviello of Tijeras. Iacoviello died at the scene. The driver of the F-150 was Juan S. Nunez, 38, of Mountainair. He was charged with great bodily harm by vehicle and driving under the influence, which is a third-degree felony.

According to the criminal complaint, New Mexico State Police Officer Sergio Corral arrived on the scene and was notified by emergency responders that the driver and passenger of the F-150 had left the vehicle on foot. Corral found Nunez walking along the highway minutes later. Nunez admitted to driving the truck and told officers he fell asleep while driving southbound on Highway 337 and awoke in the crash.

Upon searching Nunez’s vehicle, police found burnt aluminum foil in a bag, paraphernalia they believe is “consistent with fentanyl abuse and other drugs.” Nunez agreed to have his blood tested for drugs and alcohol.

At a hearing on March 12, Second Judicial District Court Judge Emeterio L. Rudolfo ruled Nunez be released under pretrial conditions requiring monitoring. Nunez’s blood screening results had not been submitted to the court before his pretrial ruling.
