U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.) and U.S. Representative Melanie Stansbury (D-NM) were sworn in for their terms representing New Mexico Jan. 3 in Washington.

“I am honored to have been elected by New Mexicans to serve a third term in the United States Senate,” Heinrich said. “In this new Congress, I look forward to continuing to deliver for the people and places of New Mexico — never wavering in the fight to lower costs for working families, grow our economy, unlock our clean energy future, and keep our communities safe. Let’s get to work.”

In the 119th Congress, Heinrich will serve as Ranking Member for the Senate Energy and Natural Resources (ENR) Committee. The ENR Committee is critical in setting national energy policies and managing our nation’s public lands within the U.S. Department of the Interior and the U.S. Forest Service. The committee also oversees the U.S. Department of Energy and has jurisdiction over U.S. territories and nuclear waste policy.

According to a press release, Heinrich will continue to serve on the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence and the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee. Heinrich will also serve as co-chair of the Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus, the Senate Fusion Energy Caucus and the Bicameral Electrification Caucus.

Stansbury was elected to represent New Mexico’s 1st Congressional District in a 2021 special election after President Joe Biden appointed then-Rep. Deb Haaland as secretary of the Interior. Stansbury won a full term the next year and was reelected in November.

“I’m deeply honored to be sworn in for another term to represent New Mexico’s First Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives,” Stansbury said. “As we start the 119th Congress, I am deeply proud to serve all New Mexicans with grit, determination, and heart.

“In the days ahead, we will continue to fight to protect the things we hold most dear—from our democracy and fundamental freedoms to ensuring every New Mexican has the opportunity to thrive.”
