A rollover crash in Moriarty last week left eight cattle dead.

According to the Moriarty Fire Department, a semi-truck crashed on Interstate 40 near Moriarty on Feb. 5 resulting in the deaths of eight cattle. The Moriarty Fire Department reported that the incident occurred around 11 p.m. at mile marker 197.

The semi-truck was carrying 43 cattle when it rolled onto its left side. While the driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was unharmed, eight of the cattle did not survive the crash. The remaining 35 cattle were safely removed from the wreckage and transported by local ranchers to a nearby fairground, where they are currently being housed.

Numerous agencies responded to the scene, including the Moriarty Fire Department, the Moriarty Police Department, the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office, the New Mexico State Police, and the New Mexico Livestock Board.

“The City of Moriarty Fire Department would like to extend a thank you to all of our outside partners for all of their assistance and hard work on this incident,” the department posted on social media. “We would also like to thank all of the local ranchers that came out to assist in taking care of and transporting the cattle.”
