Good news for lovers of green chile, tortillas, music, art and, especially, beans: Moriarty’s annual Pinto Bean Fiesta is here.

The Pinto Bean Fiesta, which dates back to the 1980s, is set this year for Sept. 28 with the Moriarty City Park Parade starting at 9 a.m. Over 60 vendors will be selling their art and local pinto bean farmers will be selling their goods in the harvest extravaganza at the park from 10 a.m.-4 p.m.

According to previous reporting in The Independent, the fiesta originally started to celebrate the local farm industry and pinto bean farmers.

The event draws hundreds of attendees each year as the pinto bean is revered in Torrance County.

“It is known as the Pinto Bean Valley, and because the majority of pinto beans are grown, for the state, in our area,” city spokesperson Brenda Tapia said.

A highly anticipated part of the fiesta is the crowning of the Pinto Bean Queen.

The fiesta is set to have all the crowd favorites it has had in years past, including live performances throughout the day.
