As the entire country learned about the historic conviction of former president Donald Trump on Thursday, City Desk ABQ kept an eye out for what our local elected officials and politicians from both sides of the aisle had to say.

Rep. Melanie Stansbury was the first New Mexico politician to weigh in on X.

“GUILTY on all counts. No one is above the law.”

Sen. Ben Ray Luján said the verdict “must be respected.”

Sen. Martin Heinrich said the law prevailed.

“No one is above the law – not even a former president. Today the law prevailed.”

Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández called Trump a “felon, a corrupt politician, and not a man of moral integrity.”

On the other side of the aisle, local Republicans railed against the verdict.

The Bernalillo County GOP advised buying a gun.

“Democrats have illegally stolen $200 million from Trump, falsely convicted him of 34 felonies, and are planning to convict him of even more. 77-year-old Trump will likely receive a life sentence. This is what they will do to EVERYONE who opposes them. Buy your guns now.”

Nella Domenici, who is running for the Senate against Heinrich, said it was a sad day.

“It is a sad day in our country when Americans see our justice system weaponized. Thankfully there is an appeals process that can correct miscarriages of justice. We stand at an unprecedented time, with our country growing more and more divided each day. This must end.  We must come together.”
