Jeremiah Sanders was released from Torrance County Detention Center, in Estancia Monday, March 4 after being arrested during a surveillance operation at a home on Highland Ave. in Estancia on March 2. According to an alert sent out by the Torrance County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO), several agencies were involved in the surveillance and successful apprehension of Sanders. Sanders had been wanted on felony warrants since last September.

Lieutenant Detective Kent Ballard told The Independent that the TCSO Criminal Investigations Unit had been watching the known location of a family home associated with Sanders, and that after confirming he was inside the residence, Sanders was arrested.

Sanders was arrested  on a warrant for three 4th-degree felony charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon connected to a September 2023 incident of road rage. According to the criminal complaint, Sanders is accused of firing a handgun from his vehicle, striking the vehicle door of another motorist in Estancia. During the altercation, the motorist, who had two other passengers in their car, returned fire with their own handgun and fled to a church where they called 911. Deputies recovered a bullet from the vehicle that had entered through the back window, nearly striking the back seat passenger.

According to the driver’s statements, the only possible explanation or motive for the road rage incident was that Sanders was aggressively questioning what the motorist and passengers were doing “around his house.”

Sanders was released March 4.

Sanders has a lengthy criminal history including alleged involvement in a 2022 shooting that left one man hospitalized from his injuries. Charges filed against him were dropped in that case.
